Therefore, the speech-language pathologists of the Gillen Brewer School are unified in our commitment to cultivating a safe space for our students to develop their communication skills. We empower students to share their unique thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Ultimately, improved communication helps students achieve greater levels of independence and competence. Working collaboratively with our fellow therapists and teaching teams, we create an intersection of language based learning across all school settings.
The speech-language pathologists of Gillen Brewer meet your child’s communication needs in a variety of ways: individual and small group sessions as well as language based support for academics and socialization during classroom activities. In addition, our speech-language pathologists collaborate to lead therapeutic groups within the classroom to help students develop and carryover their pragmatic language, social cognition, problem solving, and self-regulation skills. All of our speech-language pathologists are New York State licensed and ASHA certified as well as PROMPT trained. As expected with a diverse pediatric population, we treat a variety of communication disorders and collaborate with other professionals to provide holistic treatment.
At Gillen Brewer, all staff are trained to use a thoughtful speaking style and our speech pathologists lead the way in incorporating best practices for communication. In particular, we utilize information from the Hanen Centre, an internationally known organization committed to bettering early language intervention as well as Declarative Language, a method to help students discover and learn, a hallmark of RDI (Relationship Development Intervention). As communication specialists, we know that we are stronger when we work together and we see families as our partners. We strive to help families better understand their child’s communication profile and collaborate to create a positive landscape of communication at home using our well-practiced techniques. Through shared knowledge, collaboration, and respect, we learn from families as you learn from us as we are on the same side, our student’s.
